This artwork is 80cm by 80cm printed on HD aluminium for a razor sharp, high quality image that expresses vibrancy throughout. I’ve been working on this photographic illustration for a while. The original concept has been taken from the “Eagle Slayer” by John Bell which was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851, in the Crystal Palace. I lived and went to school in Sydenham which is a short walk from Crystal Palace park. I spent 22 years of my life there. My Nan, who lived in Peckham at the time recalls the evening the Crystal Palace burnt down.

“I can remember walking out one night and noticing how red the sky was and found it was “Crystal Palace on fire”. Also at that time it was all about Mrs Simpson and the Prince of Wales of course we didn’t like the idea as she was a divorced woman, because divorce was very rare in those days, a lot different to now days, but everything is different, a lot of which I don’t or did not agree with. Family life was the norm and people stuck together through thick and thin. I am lucky in that my family are still together – almost but more of that later”.

I studied communications at Goldsmith’s, University of London, I worked full-time and of an evening and at weekends I began to learn about the world of media. I took myself to Crystal Palace park, many times, for various photo opportunities. When I became a mum I would visit with my children. I often imagine the immensity of the Crystal Palace as a building and on the evening it was destroyed how hot the sky would have felt. I imagine the darkness that surrounded the red glow my Nan saw.
